I. Joash, the Righteous King of Judah (24:1-16)

>1. Who helped young King Joash? (1-3; 2 Kings 12:1-3) What was his life like with that kind of help? (2) How did Jekoiada help the king's practical life? (3) What did the people continue to do? (7; 2 Kings 12:3)

* 2 Chronicles 24:1-3 "Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother's name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. 2 Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years of Jehoiada the priest. 3 Jehoiada chose two wives for him, and he had sons and daughters.

* 2 Kings 12:1-21 also records these events.

* Joash was 7 when he became king. So Jehoiada, the priest instructed him in ruling Judah. When Jehoiada died at 130 Joash changed his ways to wickedness. The leaders stopped worshiping at the temple.

As I advance in age I can be tempted to stop going to church, praying, and living in love, faith, and hope. I can walk away from walking in the Spirit. I need to keep making righteous decisions.

* "Joash was seven years old when he became king" -Joash (Johoash) became king in 836 B.C.

* Jehu became king of Israel in 842 B.C. (2 Kings 12:1-3) The way king's reigns were determined places his seveth year as 836 B.C. This was when Joash became king of Judah.

>2. What did young Joash set into motion? (4-5) What might be the reason for this? What didn't the priest do? (6) What further problem was there concerning the temple of God? (7) What this say about the people of Judah?

* 2 Chronicles 24:4-5 "Some time later Joash decided to restore the temple of the LORD. 5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them, "Go to the towns of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the temple of your God. Do it now." But the Levites did not act at once.

* 2 Chronicles 24:6-7 "Therefore the king summoned Jehoiada the chief priest and said to him, "Why haven't you required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?" 7 Now the sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into the temple of God and had used even its sacred objects for the Baals."

* 2 Kings 12:6-8 "But by the twenty-third year of King Joash the priests still had not repaired the temple."

>3. How did the king solve the problem? (8-12) How was the work conducted? (13-16)

* 2 Chronicles 24:8-12 "At the king's command, a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the temple of the LORD. 9 A proclamation was then issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they should bring to the LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God had required of Israel in the desert. 10 All the officials and all the people brought their contributions gladly, dropping them into the chest until it was full. 11 Whenever the chest was brought in by the Levites to the king's officials and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal secretary and the officer of the chief priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this regularly and collected a great amount of money. 12 The king and Jehoiada gave it to the men who carried out the work required for the temple of the LORD. They hired masons and carpenters to restore the LORD's temple, and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the temple."

>4. What did the king and people do after the temple was restored? (13-16) What does this say about how the faith of one person can be a good influence to many?

* 2 Chronicles 24:13-16 "The men in charge of the work were diligent, and the repairs progressed under them. They rebuilt the temple of God according to its original design and reinforced it. 14 When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made articles for the LORD's temple: articles for the service and for the burnt offerings, and also dishes and other objects of gold and silver. As long as Jehoiada lived, burnt offerings were presented continually in the temple of the LORD. 15 Now Jehoiada was old and full of years, and he died at the age of a hundred and thirty. 16 He was buried with the kings in the City of David, because of the good he had done in Israel for God and his temple."

II. Joash, the Wicked King of Judah (24:17-22)

>5. Who was Jehoiada and how did his death affect the king and people? (17-19) What does this say about the nature of the human heart and the need to have personal faith?

* 2 Chronicles 24:17-19 "After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. 18 They abandoned the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God's anger came upon Judah and Jerusalem. 19 Although the LORD sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen."

* This is not recorded anywhere else in the Bible.

* "abandoned... forsaken... forsaken... forsaken" -The Hebrew word in verses 18, 20, and 24 is the same in these verses. It is a verb frequently used the the writer(s) to denote the reason for divine punishment.

*

*

>6. Who did the Lord sent to his people and what did he warn them? Why does the Lord ask, "Why do you... to his people when they disobey him"?

* 2 Chronicles 24:20 "Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, "This is what God says: 'Why do you disobey the LORD's commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.'"

* Zechariah's prophecy and death are unique to Chronicles.

*

*

*

>7. Did they people accept Zechariah? (21-22). How did the king betray the good will of Zechariah's father? What was Zechariah's final words?

* 2 Chronicles 24:21-22 "But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD's temple. 22 King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah's father Jehoiada had shown him but killed his son, who said as he lay dying, "May the LORD see this and call you to account."

* Zechariah's prophecy and death are unique to Chronicles.

III. Joash Dies (24:23-27)

>>8. Who attacked the Judah? (23-24) Why might the Lord allow this to happen after Joash had repaired the temple?

* 2 Chronicles 24:23-24 "At the turn of the year, the army of Aram marched against Joash; it invaded Judah and Jerusalem and killed all the leaders of the people. They sent all the plunder to their king in Damascus. 24 Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hands a much larger army. Because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on Joash."

*

*

>9. What did Joash used to pay off the king of Aram? (2 Kings 12:18) What can we learn about finishing our life of faith? (Matt. 13:18-23)

* Matthew 13:18-23 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

* 2 Timothy 4:7-8 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."

* James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

* 2 Kings 12:18 "But Joash king of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers--Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah--and the gifts he himself had dedicated and all the gold found in the treasuries of the temple of the LORD and of the royal palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram, who then withdrew from Jerusalem."

*

*

*

>10. How did Joash die? (25)

* 2 Chronicles 24:25 "When the Arameans withdrew, they left Joash severely wounded. His officials conspired against him for murdering the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him in his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings."

*

* 2 Chronicles 24:26-27 "Those who conspired against him were Zabad, son of Shimeath an Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith a Moabite woman. 27 The account of his sons, the many prophecies about him, and the record of the restoration of the temple of God are written in the annotations on the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son succeeded him as king."
