I. The Day of the Lord (1-10)

>1. Why is it unnecessary for Christians to speculate about times and dates of the Lord's coming? (1; Mk. 13:32)

* 1 Thessalonians 5:1 "Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,"

* Mark 13:32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

* Jesus is coming soon. This is sure. What is not known is when. Jesus's coming again will be sudden and unannounced. Many have set dates to their shame and disgrace. No one knows when a thief comes. Jesus himself said his coming is like a their. A thief gives no hint or secret clue as to his coming. When he suddenly come he will take what is his, the world.

Until he comes I am to be prepared and alert. I am to put on faith and love and remain hopeful. I can be assured to have trouble in this world. But I am not under God's wrath. I will be together with Jesus and his people forever.

>How will the Lord come again? (2-3)

* 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 "for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape."

We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled."

>Why does faith in Jesus' second coming have so many moral implications? (7-8)

* 1 Thessalonians 5:7-8 "For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."

>In what ways should Christian leaders exercise their leadership? (12-13)

* So many good instructions here, practical advice. These are not commands. They are not law, just advice and helpful words. All of them are good.

"Do not quench the Spirit," is interesting. The Holy Spirit is always in me. He is powerful, even raising the dead Jesus and ignites the universe. Yet, the Spirit is gentle like Jesus. The Spirit works in me as I permit. Thus, I can quench the Spirit. I do not want to do this.

Yet how can I quench the Spirit? Way back in Genesis 6:3 it says, "Then the Lord said, "My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years." And when Saul did not do what the prophet Samuel said the Spirit left him. So I believe that if I do not follow the Lord's will for me, then I will quench the Spirit, meaning his influence will be resisted.
