* Psalm 137 was written shortly after the fall of Jerusalem.

The Israelites and Judeans were now collectively called Jews by their captors, the Babylonians and Assyrians. The Jews were asked to sing joyous songs of Jerusalem, a city now laying in ruins. They had lost everything. They were poor with no retirement savings. They were in a foreign land. They could not go back. They were separated from their children. Family members had died. Their neighbors, the Edomites celebrated at their downfall. How could they sign happy songs? How can they produce something not in their power?

How can I wake up day after day and find joy in what has transpired? How can I be happy? Funny, I have learn that singing songs from the soul to the Lord even when I don't feel like it brings peace. I have learned that in quiet prayer and meditation can I find the Lord's strength.

Blessed is the person that the Lord plants on quiet waters and green meadows. Quiet waters is meditation with the Lord. Green pastures is honest prayers and songs to the Lord that now one will ever hear.
