I. Prophets in Jerusalem and Judah (5:1-5)

Return Time line by Chapters

>1. While the enemies of God had succeeded in stopping the temple from being finished did God abandon his people? (1)

* Ezra 5:1 "Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them.

* Ezra 5:1-2 and Haggai 1 concern the year is 520 BC. The temple foundation was laid, then stopped 10 years earlier when opposition came from the Samaritans. The Lord Almighty told Haggai to speak to the people. The Lord rebuked the people for building their own houses and ignoring the temple. He said he was holding back and stopping them from success because of their lackluster attitude.

The people repented. They obeyed the Lord and began work on the temple. They did not let possible resistance from the Samaritans or even the Persian Empire stop their work. Then the Lord promised them, "I am with you."

Today the Lord's temple is his people. The Spirit of God dwells in his community of believed, not a buildingof stone and wood. The Father and Son are in believers. I should take care and help build up the church that Jesus started building 2,000 years ago.

I think of my life and my actions. Do I make excuses to not do the work of the Lord? Is that the reason why I have labored much and harvested little? Even still I will seek a place to serve the Lord's people at the church I attend. I will tend to Jesus's body.

* The prophets Zechariah, Haggai, and Daniel were preaching as the temple was being built. Ezra 5:1-2 and 6:14 says Zechariah and Haggai was preaching to the returned exiles. Daniel was still in Babylon. These 3 prophets gave encouraging words. But mostly they spoke of the first and second coming of the Messiah, more so on the second coming of Jesus.

What was it like to be an average citizen of Jerusalem in those days? He had a family with needs. Life was hard. He had family obligations. Yet, he was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

The nearby territories were harassing him and his coworkers as they labored. They had reason to fear. A letter went to the king saying his work was illegal. So he could be jailed or killed if he continued the work. He could be afraid and probably was. Yet, he was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

His work was hard and he was not trained on construction. Often he did not know what to do next. Yet, he was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

He was not alone. He had coworkers. He had joined his neighbors in obeying God spoken word thru the prophets. According to 6:21 some of his coworkers were returned exiles. Others were natives that "separated themselves from the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbors in order to seek the Lord." In other words some were not returned exiles. They were locals who converted. He was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day with these men.

The average citizen was a man working at the temple site while listening to the prophets words which was encouraging and confusing. He was being promised through them that the Messiah would come to the temple he was working on. They told him that war was coming and Jerusalem would be surrounded. Then Jerusalem would be miraculously saved when the Messiah showed up in power and glory. He had hope to continue. He was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

Finally, good news came from the king. Not only should he finish the work. But also those who tried to stop them would have to pay for his and his coworkers expenses. Again he was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

After around 5 years of working he finished on March 12, 515. He was present when the temple was dedicated. It was not as great as the original temple. Yet it was done. He thanked God that he was compelled to assist in the work at the temple site day after day.

Is my life any different than his? Was life with faith in Jesus before me so different than my life and time? I have obligations to family. I have reason to be afraid. Often I don't know what to do next. I have all different kinds of friends who follow Jesus all over the world. I listen to preachers on Sundays and study the Bible. I get discouraged and then encouraged. No. My life is not different. I am compelled to assist in the work at the living temple which is God's people day after day.

He even removed from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple in Babylon. "Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor, and he told him, 'Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.' So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.""

*

>What did he discover?

* Ezra 6:3-5 "In the first year of King Cyrus, the king issued a decree concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem: Let the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices, and let its foundations be laid. It is to be ninety feet high and ninety feet wide, with three courses of large stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid by the royal treasury. Also, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, are to be returned to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; they are to be deposited in the house of God."

* Ezra 6:6-7 "Now then, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and you, their fellow officials of that province, stay away from there. *

*

*

*

>In 8-10?

* Ezra 6:8-10 "Moreover, I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this house of God: The expenses of these men are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury, from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop. 9 Whatever is needed--young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem--must be given them daily without fail, 10 so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons."

*

They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia. 15 The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius."
