I. Defeat of Og king of Bashan (1-11)

>1. What did the Lord promise when Bashan came to stop Israel from going into the promised land? (1-2; c.f. Num. 21:33-35)

* Deuteronomy 3:1-2 "Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. The Lord said to me, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.'"

*

*

*

*

*

>2. How strong was Og? (5, 11)

* Deuteronomy 3:5 "All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages."

* Deuteronomy 3:11 "(Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaites. His bed was made of iron and was more than thirteen feet long and six feet wide. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)"

*

*

*

*

*

>What was the result when they obeyed in faith? (3, 6)

* Deuteronomy 3:3 "So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, leaving no survivors."

* Deuteronomy 3:6 "We completely destroyed them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying every city--men, women and children."

*

*

*

*

*

>How did the Lord keep his word? (4, 7)

* Deuteronomy 3:4 "At that time we took all his cities. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them--the whole region of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan."

* Deuteronomy 3:7 "But all the livestock and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves."

*

*

*

*

>From looking at a map, what land was now in Israel's possession? (8-10)

* Deuteronomy 3:8-10 "So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon. (Hermon is called Sirion by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.) We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, towns of Og's kingdom in Bashan."

*

*

*

*

>3. What can we learn about the progress of Israel as they drew nearer and nearing the promised land?

*

*

*

*

>What can we learn of how God works in us through this? (Matt. 7:24-27; Rom. 12:1-2)

* Matthew 7:24-27 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

* Romans 12:1-2 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."

II. Division of the Land (12-20)

>4. What was the Reubenites' and Gadites' inheritance? (12, 16-17)

* Deuteronomy 3:12 "Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns."

* Deuteronomy 3:16-17 "But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the Ammonites. Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah, from Kinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), below the slopes of Pisgah."

*

*

*

*

>What was Manasseh's inheritance? (13-15)

* Deuteronomy 3:13-15 "The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half tribe of Manasseh. (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites. Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites; it was named after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.) And I gave Gilead to Makir."

*

*

*

*

>Why were they called a half tribe? (Gen. 46:19-20, 48:5)

* Genesis 46:19-20 "The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On."

* Genesis 48:5 "Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine."

*

*

*

>5. How did they end up receiving the land east of the Jordan? (Num. 32, consider verses 14-15)

*

*

*

*

>Considering their impatience, what happened to them more than the other tribes when armies of other nations came? (2 Kings 10:32-33)

* 2 Kings 10:32-33 "In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael overpowered the Israelites throughout their territory east of the Jordan in all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh), from Aroer by the Arnon Gorge through Gilead to Bashan."

*

*

*

*

>6. After the Lord agreed to their request what did they still have to do? (18)

* Deuteronomy 3:18 "I commanded you at that time: "The Lord your God has given you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of your brother Israelites."

*

*

*

*

>Who did they have to leave in order to fulfill the promise they made? (19)

* Deuteronomy 3:19 "However, your wives, your children and your livestock (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you,'

*

*

*

*

>For how long? (20)

* Deuteronomy 3:20 "until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them, across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you."

*

*

*

*

>When did that happen? (Judges 2:20-23)

* Judges 2:20-23 "Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and said, 'Because this nation has violated the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers and has not listened to me, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their forefathers did.' The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua."

*

*

*

*

>What can we learn about the spiritual battle we are in? (Zeph. 1:12-14; Matt. 25:1-13)

* Zephaniah 1:12-14 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, 'The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.' Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. They will build houses but not live in them; they will plant vineyards but not drink the wine. The great day of the Lord is near-- near and coming quickly. Listen! The cry on the day of the Lord will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior there."

* Matthew 25:1-13 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."

III. Moses Could Look, But Not Enter (21-29)

>7. What words of encouragement did Moses give his successor, Joshua? (21-22)

* Deuteronomy 3:21-22 "At that time I commanded Joshua: 'You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.'"

*

*

*

*

>How does this same word apply to us today? (Matt. 28:18-20)

* Matthew 28:18-20 "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

*

*

*

*

>8. What kind of prayer did Moses say? (23)

* Deuteronomy 3:23 "At that time I pleaded with the Lord"

*

*

*

*

>Who else in the Bible prayed this way? (2 Sam. 12:16; Dan. 9:3; Mark 5:22-23; and 2 Cor. 12:8-9; Luke 22:44)

* 2 Samuel 12:16 "David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house and spent the nights lying on the ground."

* Daniel 9:3 "So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes."

* Mark 5:22-23 "Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."

* 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 "Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

* Luke 22:44 "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground."

>What can we learn about prayer?

*

*

*

*

>9. What did Moses ask for?

* Deuteronomy 3:24-25 (NIV) 24 "O Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do? 25 Let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan--that fine hill country and Lebanon."

*

*

*

*

>Considering his life why was this a understandable request?

*

*

*

*

>10. What was the Lord's answer? (26-27)

* Deuteronomy 3:26-27 "But because of you the Lord was angry with me and would not listen to me. 'That is enough,' the Lord said. 'Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.' Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west and north and south and east. Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross this Jordan."

*

*

*

*

>Why? (Num. 20:9-12)

* Numbers 20:9-12 "So Moses took the staff from the Lord's presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them."

*

*

*

*

>What can we learn about the way the Lord deals with leaders of his sheep?

*

*

*

*

>11. How was Moses to treat his successor?

* Deuteronomy 3:28-29 "But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see." So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor."

* Hebrews 3:12-13 "See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."

* Hebrews 10:24-25 "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
